Located in the town of Bovina Center, NY, DCAD Studio sits on a picturesque, pine covered 15 acres owned by artist and designer Neil Powell.

Neil grew up on a small pig farm nature-scape in rural Western Kentucky. It was there he developed a deep appreciation for the handmade—whether while making salt dough sculptures with his mother or learning to crochet with his grandmother, he realized the hands are wonderful tools for creating. From there he went on to get his BFA from the University of Kentucky where he studied graphic design and painting.

For thirty years, Neil has created award winning brand design and advertising communications for many of the worlds largest brands. His work has been recognized nationally and internationally, and has garnered Best Of Show honors at The Art Directors Club of New York, The One Club and Clios., and his work has garnered an Emmy. He has guest lectured on the subject of design around the world and is a former senior portfolio instructor at the School Of Visual Arts in Manhattan.  His design work is part of the permanent collection of The Smithsonian Institute’s Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum.

Now, Neil spends most of his time pursuing fine art. His lifelong obsession with old books led to his discovery of them as a unique art medium. Most of the books used in his art are damaged, tattered and torn, discarded and banished to the $1 shelf or garage bin. Conceptually, his work explores new social, cultural, and political narratives through themes of relatedness and identity.

Neil lives and works from his studio in Bovina Center, NY with his chocolate lab, Which Way and pig Toodle Loo.

As an artist, designer and teacher, Neil embraces a multi-disciplinary approach to creativity. He encourages students to take risks and discover hidden talents while questioning norms. Neil prompts critical thinking and discussions, encouraging students to explore the purpose and meaning of their work. He helps students develop technical skills and confidence, embracing a fluid approach and challenging the established ways of doing things.
